Cakes With Faces Interview.

Hi all!

Today FluffyGhost is super lucky to be hosting an awesome interview with Amy Crabtree creator & designer of Cakes With Faces.

(Amy Crabtree from Cakes With Faces at the Manchester MCM Expo.)

Amy is a talented up and coming illustrator who designs some of the kawaiiest illustrations on T-shirts and prints. Like moi she shares an undying passion for cute food with faces so how could I not want to interview her! It would be madness I say…Madness!!

1.When did you first discover your love for kawaii and Japanese culture?

Originally from when I started watching anime…Then the more I discovered about Japanese culture, the more I liked – from the Fruits fashion books and Kera magazine, to crazy vending machines, j-pop, sushi and all the flavour’s of Kitkats they have! I went to Tokyo on holiday two years ago and can’t wait to go back. It was so great to visit Harajuku, Akihabara, Shinjuku and all the amazing places I’d heard about. One of the things I liked most was how respectful people are to each other, and how well you’re treated in shops and restaurants, but you’re not allowed to tip!

2. What a lit your passion for “food with faces”?

Everything’s cuter when it has a face, and I guess I just think about food too much! Creating characters is more fun than just drawing still life objects.

(Illustrations courtesy of Cakes With Faces.)

3. Does your artwork reflect your personal style/home décor? (Are you as much of a kawaii nut in real life as your artwork portrays?)

I’d love to dress like a Harajuku girl every day, I’m not that extreme but I do like to be colourful! I’ve had my hair most colours, at the moment it’s turquoise: And I’m running out of room for my anime figures so time to put up some more shelves… My favourites are my K-On figures and a Miku Hatsune from Tokyo.

4. What essentially made you want to go into the graphics industry?

When your creative you have to let it out! I have been drawing in my current style for a while and started thinking it was shame to keep them all locked up on my PC; so I started my website, which was just a gallery at first. I’ve been wanting to have a line of t-shirts for a long time, so finally I just decided to go for it! Now I’m dreaming about blindboxes…

5. Are they any brands that have inspired you in your work?

I’m a big fan of Tokidoki I love his characters: The Cactus Friends, Donutella, Unicornos, and I’m looking forward to the Punkstar frenzies later this year. Also Lunartik (Matt JOnes), Bryan Lee O’Malley, Jon Burgerman – he did an art show with a pizza theme, how awesome is that?!

(Amy Crabtree behind her Cakes With Faces Stall at Manchester MCM Expo.)

6. What design programs do you use?

I always draw by hand first, and then use Illustrator to work it up. I love the clean look of vectors and the idea that your drawing could be billboard-size and not pixelate!

7. Any tips for aspiring designers just starting out?

A graphics tablet is essential, mine is really basic but I couldn’t do without it. And for Illustrator, learn to tame the pen tool and away you go! The Pathfinder tools are also really useful to add and subtract shapes. My best art tip is to do “Flip horizontal” or look at it in a mirror, which makes the errors really obvious; like if it’s out of proportion or the whole thing’s leaning to the right!

8. I love your Savage Pie design, what influenced you when you created this?

Savage Pie is something beyond a traditional cupcake with a face. Where does the face go on a slice of pie? That gave me the idea for the big teeth, and I think it’s always more interesting to have a bit of a story, or a hint of dark in with the cute.  If I was the cream sitting next to that pie I’d be pretty scared!

9. What product (Or products.) are you most proud of and would recommend to my readers?

As your readers are Japan-fans I’d recommend my “All the best stuff is from Japan” t-shirt:

(You can pick up this T-shirt here.)

It’s really colourful, and comes in ladies’ and guys’ sizes. I wanted to create a design with more on it than my other t-shirts, so I thought of all the things I like that are from Japan and crammed as many as I could onto it!

You might also like my “Cuter with Cat Ears” t-shirt, which glows in the dark!

(Find this kawaii T-shirt here.)

10. Is Cake With Faces doing any more events this year?

I’ll be doing MCM Expo London in October, which is going to be absolutely  huge this time, Thought Bubble in Leeds in November and my favourite event, Hyper Japan Christmas! Cons are exhausting but I love meeting everyone and seeing all the amazing cosplayers.

Its been excellent having you here, do you have any other designs/ideas in the pipeline currently?

“I’d like to have a go at making plushies, and have an idea for a small comic-style book later that will hopefully be ready later this year. I quite like the idea of a colour-in t-shirt that comes with fabric crayons – what do you think?”

Plushes always go down a storm in my eye’s especially if there kawaii!

As for the T-shirt I think that sounds like great fun and definitely would give you an original edge amongst your products!

Is there anything you would like to add or share?

“Thanks for featuring me on Fluffy Ghost!

I’m always doing new drawings so keep an eye on my Facebook or Twitter @cakeswithfaces. I promise never to make boring posts about what I’m having for dinner. (Unless it’s sushi…)”

There we have it folks an amazing interview from the ever awesome Amy Crabtree. Be sure to stop by her website here or even better go visit her at some of her events!

Thank you so much for taking your time to share your experience’s and adorable illustrations here Amy. FluffyGhost wishes you all the luck in the world for your future products and voyages. We hope to all see you soon.

Take care all!

Kuma Crafts!

How I love thee!

I have been quite a big fan of Kuma Crafts for some time now. I can remember when they first started out with a handful of original designs… Which instantly got me hooked of course & I can be quite picky when it comes to kawaii jewellery.

I must admit I haven’t been this impressed with an Etsy store in a long time. Each time I pop by I am always delighted to see new and even cuter designs. My purse is sure paying for it.

Heres my most recent/naughty splurge:

I love the Nyan cone design so much! I am the ultimate sucker for a kawaii cat design, Nyan Nyan Nyanko or Maneki Neko…So when I saw this design I just had to have instantly!

I am dead impressed with the T-shirt, it’s dead comfy, good quality and the necklace is to die for. I adore all the detail and love that has gone into this acrylic pendant. Definitely worth the price for the workmanship gone into it! I was also touched by the kawaii cat phone charm freebie in my order. Dead lovely and really finished up my order to a “T”.

I thought I should share all of my Kuma Crafts necklace collection as its starting to grow to a decent size:

The first ever Kuma Crafts necklace I ordered was the lilac cat pendant. It has lasted the test of time and I still love it to this day. The second necklace was by chance/luck as I had just recently at the time liked the Kuma Crafts Facebook page…Turned out by doing so I had entered into a giveaway I wasn’t aware of and won!!! I was so gobsmacked and overjoyed to had discovered my pure luck! So I got to choose the gold glittery tiger necklace. (Which sadly broke due me being clumsy, only the loop was damaged so I plan on turning it into a brooch soon as its far to kawaii to be wasted.)

I then went crazy and purchased the Sailor Moon necklaces as I grew up watching this as many of us has and been a life long fan since. I really love her take on the designs there just perfect as well as being affordable as a lot of Sailor Moon merchandise is quite expensive…Especially if it is vintage.

I then received the bunny necklace recently as a gift from my awesome kawaii sister Ella Kitty. She had won it in the Super Cute Kawaii giveaway and well I just adore her so much for thinking of me. (I’m currently wearing this one now!)

Which takes us up to date to my Nyan cone order. Hurray!!

I love each and every part of my Kuma Crafts collection, from the necklaces, top & phone charm. I shall be back in the future that for sure is guaranteed.

Here’s what I currently have my eye on:

Image via: Kuma Crafts Etsy.

I need this Maneki Neko T-shirts so badly! Either the one in blue or pink or possibly both! I loved her necklace design of it too, although she does not have any more in her store I shall be keeping my eye open for that if its restocked.

Om Nom Nom Kitty Necklace via: Kuma Crafts Etsy.

I need this cutie pie too! It’s just so damn adorable!

As you can see I am by far a Kuma Crafts Junkie! I really do just love that store so much. I could list all my desires but we would be here all day. So I shall leave this post at that.

Do stop by her store and say hi as Kuma Crafts really is just that awesome!

Take care,

Hello Kitty Shoes!

Afternoon!

So today I’ve been browsing the net far & wide to bring you some of the most super kawaii  Hello Kitty trainers I could find: Just in time for your summer wardrobe too!

Heres my personal favourites:

1.

(Twenty10 beige Hello Kitty high top vegan fashion trainers: Buy here!)

I really do adore the design on these shoes, they might look more autumn/winter kinda shoes but who cares when there this cute! I mean there’s going to be the odd gloomy day in summer right?

2.

(Reebok X Hello Kitty Plush Shoes: Buy here!)

These have been on my wish list for a long, long time indeed. It was love at first sight with these. I personally would go for the white pair, but if money wasn’t an issue I would gladly take the pink as well. Sadly these shoes are only sold in Japan, but thank god for Ebay as there are still a few pairs being sold from Hong Kong! Grab then while you can! Or I might beat you to it… It’s a battle of quilt with my bank account I do believe hahaha!

3.

(Purple Hello Kitty Shoes: Buy here!)

Although these aren’t from a famous brand I must admit I am a bit of a sucker for them. I’ve always loved a bit of tartan here & there & purple being my favourite colour makes it an easy win. They also come in black/pink & red too.

I really could go on forever listing Hello Kitty shoes I adore, as there are so many different styles & types of shoes so I do feel I was only skimming the surface today. But I do hope you like some of my choices, as finding them is one thing…To buy is another I tend to find.

Anyway, I must dash!

Take care,

Ink With A Touch Of Lolita!

Hey all!

Recently an awesome reader recommended me to a very talented artist…

I’m normally quite brutal when it comes to my taste in art but I was pleasantly surprised to find something more unique than the mainstream junk that’s normally poured down our throat these days.

The artist name is Sharayah Honeyager who combines pen, ink & watercolour as if they were naturally made for one another.

Heres some of my personal favourites:

1.

(On the Up and Up print Via: Sharayahhoney.)

I find this piece very inspiring, I love all the different textures & how they work so beautifully with the colour palette. It has a hint of lolita fashion which I adore but with a twist of the Edwardian era combined with some fairy tale presence. Overall creating a very majestic piece of art!

2.

(They Just Never Seem To Last image via: Sharayahhoney.)

This piece is equally stunning. (I’m always a sucker for huge anime styled eyes too!) I love the rugged texture of the shading via the pen. It portrays the wear & tear of life which to me is quite refreshing. I feel the artist has captured that child like innocence profoundly. But I wouldn’t say that makes this a depressing piece filled with pain and grief but more with a dark humour to it: Especially in the pieces title. I mean who hasn’t gone through a million gold fishes when they were children? It’s one of the best ways to learn about death as a child & I feel the artist has really brought that moment to life. Great piece indeed.

Sharayah Honeyager also specialises in paintings & sculptures… (Coming soon to her website.)

So be sure to check out the rest of Sharayah Honeyager work here.

On another note I was presented with a blog award which I am very grateful towards so thank you Omg Toasties for the blog love.

5.  I’m a huge gaming nerd too. I’ve not missed a handheld device since the gameboy colour & I still have them all to this day. (I used to borrow my friends original gameboy.)

So there we have it! A little more about myself… ^__<

Take care all!

I Love Stationary!

Hey,

Recently a friend recommended a kawaii shop called Yozocraft to me as we were discussing letter sets (Yer this is a normal topic for a kawaii junkie.) & how expensive some can be… Well her recommendation sure paid off and saved me some pennies as their prices are awesome. Especially if your currency is the British pound!

So here’s what I splashed out on:

Apart from hoarding the odd letter set, I do usually eat my way through them constantly with kawaii pen pals, errand lists etc. They have become the normal type of paper in my house. So it’s always awesome to find a cute store that sell great designs that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!

I was thrilled with the choice of deco tape. I love the larger ones as there perfect for decorating parcels & mail envy for. I mean who wants to use boring brown postal tape? Blarghh!

So I went for a kawaii cat design, (Cats in clothes are to die for!) Kutusushita Nyanko & Sentimental Circus! Super kawaii tape indeed!

Also I got some cute envelope memos and some cat card cases for swaps etc…

The most expensive individual item I purchased would have to be the Choo Choo cat sticker pack for $6.50: I really do adore there designs so I couldn’t resist it. It’s really handy to as it’s a booklet with tons of kawaii cat stickers in it. I’ll probably take pictures of it separately on my Flickr at some point.

The Mamegoma stickers are more than likely for future swaps.

Finally I ended my shopping with some Rilakkuma products! I’m head over heals for the macaroon design it’s so adorable! As is the paper tape. I’ve never used paper tape before, so that will be interesting using that.

Has anyone else used paper tape?

So there we have it. Just a small insight into my normal stationary purchasing habits!

I do also recommend Yozocraft if you’re not in a hurry for your parcel. (I think I waited just shy of a month but it was worth it!)

They also do tons of kawaii crafting supplies.

Anyway have a great weekend and see you all soon!

Popin Cooking!

Hey all!

So today I took a brave step into the kawaii candy craft world of Japanese Popin Cooking kits.

I must admit after watching tons of YouTube videos on people masterfully creating these delicate sweet pieces, that I’ve come to a point where I believe this is a form of art in a way…

Why is making Popin Cooking candy a form of art?

Well lets look at my first ever amateur attempt and were see why haha:

Well there we have it! A lump of goo that looks rather sorry for itself.

You’ve seen it here first people, I suck at Popin Cooking… I think a lot of practice is in store for me, if I ever want to create beautiful treats that is.

I must admit though the flavours were very artificial (Even for candy I know!) that I really wasn’t going to consider putting that in my mouth. Was pretty diasgusting to be honest. Or maybe thats just mine haha?

Has anyone else tried a Popin Cooking kit? I would love to hear from you all!

Well take care, Im off to sew some Totoro’s.
